Unit 1

Resource
Definition
Example
renewable
A resource that can be replenished over fairly short spans of time, such as months, years, or decades.
Water, Wind, and Cotton
nonrenewable
A resource that can take millions of years to form and accumulate.
Gasoline, Coal, and Fossil Fuels
Fossil fuel
Hydrocarbons that may be used as fuel, including coal, oil, and natural gas.
Oil, Petroluem, and Gas
ore
A useful metallic mineral that can be mined at a profit.
Lead, Gold, Tin, and Alumiunm
Non metallic Mineral
Noncombustible solid rocks or minerals used in industry and construction in natural form or after mechanical, thermal, or chemical processing or for the extraction of nonmetallic elements or their compounds.
Quartz, Feldspar, Mica, and Calcite.
Metallic mineral
Minerals with metal like qualities.
Graphite, Galena, Magnetite, and Pyrite

Unit 2

Energy
Advantage
Disadvantage
Solar
It's free and non-polluting.
The initial cost of the equipment used to harness the suns energy.
Nuclear energy
The uranium nuclei split into smaller nuclei and emit neutrons and heat energy.
The storage and management of dangerous high level radioactive waste.
Wind energy
In the next 50 to 60 years, wind power could meet between 5% to 10% of the country's demand for electricity.
You must have wind. Without wind, you are dead in the water. So you must live in an area that has consistent wind.
Hydroelectric
The water held in a reservoir behind a dam is a form of stored energy that can be released through the dam to produce electric power.
The high potential for extreme damage to the local ecosystem.
Geothermal
Hot water is used directly for heating and to turn turbines that generate electric power.
It lies mainly in the exploration stage.
Tidal
The strong in-and-out flow of tidal water drives turbines and electric generators.
Severe Weather like Storms and Typhoons can be quite devastating on the Tidal Power Equipment especially those place on the Sea Floor.

1. Research the Three Mile Island Disaster . Pictures?

The nuclear accident at Three Mile Island eliminated a great deal of the optimism about the possibilities of nuclear power.
On March 28, 1979, the Three Mile Island Nuclear Reactor was hit by a major accident.
